In the last few years, the avocado has become a very popular addition to sandwiches, salads, and burritos, and has now made its way into almost every restaurant and home. So, why the sudden craze over this versatile fruit that been around for thousands of years? Once you look at the story behind the avocado, its health benefits, and its truly enjoyable taste, it’s easy to see why the fruit has become so widely valued.
Where they come from
While the fruit dates back to the Fifteenth Century, it is said to have been around well before then. Up to 90 percent of US avocados are imported from other countries, and originated in South-Central Mexico. While they are also grown in California, the state consumes roughly 300 million avocados a year.
Versatility
This fruit is considered one of the good fats that can give you a satisfying full feeling while fueling your body with the nutrients it needs, like potassium, vitamin E, and fiber. The avocado is a healthy replacement for less healthy fats like meat and cheese, and it actually tastes good. It is a fantastic alternative to meat for those who don’t eat it, and therefore can be used in sandwiches, as a sauce on pasta, a spread on toast, and so much more.
The trend
The growing status of the fruit can probably be linked to the popularity of guacamole in chain restaurants, such as Chipotle–becoming a widespread favorite almost over night. The avocado has gone beyond a food trend and has now made its way into fashion. People are now wearing and buying tee shirts, socks, and phone cases to flaunt the love for their favorite fruit.
I avoca(DO)
The fruit has truly become so loved, it’s practically a symbol for love itself. That can be said due to the overwhelming amount of people who are taking their passion for this fruit into proposing to their significant other. That’s right—people are actually using the avocado as a box for the ring! The avocado has made its way into the homes, hearts, and even life changing moments, of people all over. Its continuously growing popularity looks to be a status that is here to stay.
